ABQ BIOPARK - ZOO
HIGH DESERT ROSE GARDEN

ALBUQUERQUE, NM

The HDRG illustrates the place roses have in Albuquerque’s xeric landscapes by showcasing roses appropriate for its climate (antique roses, & desert cultivars).  Demonstrating proper culture practices to roses and how they adapt to low water use.  This will also provide a place of beauty and education for people of all ages as well as provided restrooms, food concessions, water fountains, and a place to hold various events.

The HDRG will be located between Camino de Colores Garden and the Japanese Garden.

Soil improvements will be made to current conditions by using sand and adding 50% compost depth of 2 feet.  Also the roses and plants will thrive on low water usage.  By using old cultivars or species adapted to this type of water.  Examples are hybrid teas, climbing roses, bourbons, and native NM roses.  Efficient irrigation was designed by using pop up spray heads, directing water to swales, various bed designs that are below grade for easy water runoff, and permeable pavers for pathways.  Crusher fine that is compacted and bark mulch will also be used.
